Our Habitat Programs
No matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve to have a decent life. We deserve to feel strength and stability day after day. We deserve to know we have the power to take care of ourselves and build our own futures. At Habitat for Humanity, this is what unites us. Through shelter, we empower. Our shared vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
People in Frederick County partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place that they can call home. With our help, Habitat for Humanity homeowners achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build a better life for themselves and their families.
Habitat for Humanity is best known for its home build construction. In this program, staff and volunteers work alongside qualified applicants as they build their own home. When construction is complete, the new homeowner purchases their home at a low price through a low-down payment, low-interest rate loan, which makes it affordable for their budget.
2Frederick County Affordable Housing Land Trust
The Frederick County Affordable Housing Land Trust is the first community land trust in the state of Maryland. It received the Innovation Award from the Community Development Network of Maryland in 2016 for its trailblazing efforts to create long-lasting affordable housing units.
Through this program, Habitat for Humanity obtains homes throughout the county that are in disrepair. The homes are repaired and renovated to be market ready. When the home is finished, it is sold to a qualified home buyer; however, the Land Trust retains ownership of the land. The home owner pays a small monthly rental fee on the land through a 99-year, renewable lease, but removing that cost from the purchase price of the house makes the purchase of a home affordable for more Frederick County residents.
3Habitat Home Repairs
Habitat for Humanity of Frederick County partners with local families who need assistance to complete necessary repairs or modifications to their homes. Each project is specific to the needs of the homeowner and their home in order to increase the quality of life for the homeowner and keep their home a safe and stable environment.
The Neighborhood Revitalization program focuses on uplifting neighborhoods for the benefit of all who live there. Completed through individual home repairs for citizens in need, as well as projects that benefit the community at large, the program aims to give all residents a sense of pride and dignity where they live. To accomplish these efforts, Habitat for Humanity collaborates with neighborhood residents and local partners to change the face of neighborhoods and the lives of the families who live there.
Women Build’s mission is to empower women to take action against poverty housing conditions. The more people we can train to become effective volunteers, the better equipped we will be to fight poverty housing. Women Build brings together women from all walks of life to address, in a concrete way, the housing crisis facing millions of women and children across the globe.
Here in Frederick County, Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program is ideal for women who want to learn construction skills while building homes and communities. Our Women Build program brings together women from all walks of life to address the local housing crisis in Frederick County. Best of all, no experience is necessary!
6Cost of Home
Families across the United States are paying too high a price to cover the cost of their home. Rents and homeownership costs are skyrocketing, while wages are not keeping pace. Far too often, families struggle to make ends meet. Everywhere you look – cities, suburbs, rural areas – the stability that home should bring remains out of reach for too many families.
Mission Trips are a great way for members of our Frederick County community to travel to other areas to better the living situations of people who live in substandard or storm-damaged housing. For more than 10 years, Habitat for Humanity of Frederick County’s mission team has traveled to other areas of the country that have been struck by disaster to help residents rebuild.
