Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program empowers women from all walks of life to address, in a concrete way, the need for more affordable housing in our communities. Through Women Build, volunteers and sponsors give our neighbors the strength, stability and self-reliance of affordable home ownership.
The first Women Build home was built in 1991 and the effort grew to an official Habitat for Humanity program in 1998. Since then, women volunteers have constructed over 2,400 homes around the world. Locally at Habitat Frederick, our Women Build program began in 2011 during a home build on Madison Street. Following that, women volunteers were active on local project sites as part of National Women Build Week each spring from 2011 to 2018, after which the national event was canceled. In 2017, we constructed a Women Build home on Park Avenue in Brunswick, where women completed the majority of fundraising and volunteerism.
Women Build is not about excluding men, but is about including women and opening new doors of opportunity for them. Men are often involved in Women Build projects to support and encourage women who come to volunteer. Women Build has empowered countless volunteers in Frederick County with a tangible way to give back to our community while learning and enhancing construction skills. No experience is necessary for Women Build volunteers!
Building on this history, it is with great excitement that Habitat for Humanity of Frederick County announced the first Frederick Women Build Week, June 1st – 8th, 2019.
During the 2019 Frederick Women Build Week, small groups of women volunteers made a BIG impact across the county by working on multiple project sites through Habitat Frederick’s A Brush With Kindness Program. Through this program, Habitat’s construction team works year-round to complete home repairs and modifications for homeowners in our community that are in need of assistance. In this fiscal year, Habitat has completed nearly 30 projects for veterans, single mothers, senior citizens and many more. The momentum and energy of Frederick Women Build Week helped us reach the finish line of this program’s most productive year ever. By volunteering or making a financial donation to Frederick Women Build Week, you enhanced the quality of life for local homeowners, giving each one a brighter, safer future in their home.
