Requirements for Homeownership

Thank you for your interest in Habitat for Humanity's homeownership program in Frederick. Please review the requirements listed below to determine whether you might be eligible for this program.

To qualify to be a Frederick Habitat homeowner, you must have:

1. A housing need. For example, your current living environment is not adequate for the family because too crowded, unsafe, unsanitary or not affordable.

2. Lived in Frederick County for a minimum of one year.

3.  A total family income between $21,944 and $43,888 a year, or between 30% and 60% percent of Frederick County's median income of $73,149, as of 2007.

We will ask you for credit references and, with your permission, conduct a credit check. We will verify employment and income; verify checking and savings account balances; and get a reference from your current and previous landlords. You must also provide a copy of your driver's license or birth certificate.

Approval

Approval for a Habitat home means you are willing to join programs to learn and practice budgeting, home repair, and maintenance. We ask that you attend homeownership workshops presented by the Family Support Committee.

We also require that all adult (18 years and older) members of your household be willing to contribute between 300  and 500 hours (combined) of "sweat equity" before you purchase your home. Family size will determine the total number of hours. Relatives and friends can contribute up to 30% of the total hours required.

Finally, you will be required to provide a $500.00 down payment, payable at the time you sign your letter of approval.

Applying

If you feel you meet the above guidelines, we encourage you to fill out an application. You may obtain an application or get more information by calling our office at 301-698-2449 or emailing us at info@frederickhabitat.org.
