Homeownership 

Habitat for Humanity of Frederick County, Maryland commits to partnering with the local community to build and sell them at prices well below market value to qualified buyers. Future homeowners contribute sweat equity, attend homeownership and financial training workshops, and follow program guidelines to obtain a mortgage.

Applicant Eligibility

Habitat homeowners are selected based on eligibility requirements below. Selected future homeowners receive financial training and homeowner’s education, assistance with mortgage applications and homebuyer assistance programs.

Eligibility for Habitat for Humanity of Frederick County, MD’s Homebuyer program

  • Currently live or work in Frederick County (for a minimum of one year).
  • Have a total household income below 80% of Frederick County’s
    area median income (AMI) and are able to qualify for a mortgage.
  • Demonstrate a need for safe and affordable housing.

Sweat Equity

Habitat for Humanity requires future homeowners to contribute a minimum number of hours of sweat equity during the build of their new home.  Family size determines the total number of required hours.

If you are considering purchasing a new home, or any other home purchase, here are a few resources and steps to take.

  • Checking on your credit report
  • Putting aside funds to use for a downpayment. 
  • Participating in a homebuyer preparation program such as United Way’s Credit Cafe, HHS, United Way Prosperity account.
