Welcome to our tour of Habitat for Humanity homes built in Frederick County, Maryland, since 1995. We have built or renovated homes across the county - in Adamstown, Brunswick, Buckeystown, Emmitsburg, Frederick, Thurmont, Middletown and Walkersville.

The homes are shown by the year of completion, with the most recently completed appearing first, as well a photo of the homeowner (if available).

2011

338 and 340 Madison Street in Frederick are a duplex with two firsts. 338 Madison is our first Women Build Project and the two homes are also the first "green" build for Frederick Habitat. Sponsored in part by Citi, TriState Home Services, All Saint's Episcopal Church, Maryland Affordable Housing Trust, Catoctin Charities, and Women's Giving Circle, this build was a major accomplishment for our community.

2009

213 South Jefferson Street in Middletown was a major renovation. We lifted the roof and added a room to the 2nd floor and garage. The George L Shields Foundation and the Holy Family Catholic Church of Middletown were major contibutors.

2009

915 East A Street in Brunswick. Rehabed with a grant from the Ausherman Foundation.

2008

18 W. 17th Street in Frederick. The lot was donated to Habitat by the Housing Authority of the City of Frederick and the Hope VI Center.

2008

34 St. Joseph Lane in Emmitsburg.

2006

7052 Blue Mountain Road was the first Habitat home in Thurmont. Construction started in August 2006 with completion just four months later, just  in time for the newest Habitat family to be "home for the holidays." Corporate sponsors CitiGroup and Freddie Mac joined with many local businesses and hard working volunteers to make this home a reality.

2006

2002 Academy Court in Emmitsburg was part of a campaign called "Five Cities, Five Days, Five Homes" sponsored by Drees Homes in partnership with Habitat chapters in five localities across the country. Drees recruited and coordinated the work of all the subcontractors. The Ausherman family donated land. Right on schedule, the construction ended on Day 5, with dedication the following day. This is the second Habitat home in Emmitsburg and is across the street from the first Habitat house built in 2005.

2005

2001 Academy Court in Emmitsburg was the first Habitat home built in the northern part of Frederick County. This land came from the Ausherman family donation to Interfaith Housing Alliance. The United Methodist Chuches of Frederick County stepped forward to sponsor this home, enlisting Mt. St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg and the nearby Gettysburg College Habitat chapter as partners. This marked the second time that the Methodist Churches had sponsored a Habitat home.

8814

2004

8814 Biggs Ford Road was the first Habitat home built in Walkersville. Eleven Walkersville-area churches joined together to build the home on a lot purchased by Habitat. The overwhelming community involvement included  a "Raise the Roof" concert kicking off the project and a 2 x 4 "Board Blessing" fundraiser. Work began in Spring 2004, with dedication of the home in December. This was the first interdenominational sponsorship of a Habitat home in Frederick County.

162

2004

162 B & O Avenue in Frederick involved restoration of a home in the Historic District. The owner discounted the price to make it accessible to Habitat. A new partner, CitiGroup, provided financial support to get the project moving. However, the Historic Preservation Commission required Habitat to build as exact a replica of the original structure as possible. This created some unique and costly challenges, such as laying on a metal roof and using wood rather than aluminum or vinyl siding. Students from Mt. St. Mary's University and members of the Frederick County Board of Realtors dedicated many hours to the project. The restoration was completed in mid-2004, with a dedication in December.

915

2004

915 East A Street in Brunswick marked the first Habitat construction in this area of the county. In late summer 2002, the Outreach Committee of Brook Hill United Methodist Church approached Habitat, wanting to sponsor a home. Habitat had recently purchased the lot in Brunswick so the timing was perfect for a new partnership! Brook Hill invited all the other United Methodist Churches in Frederick County to partner on this project. Work began in 2003 but unexpected delays related to water and sewer lines delayed completion until 2004.

5168

2002

5168 Doubs Road in Adamstown brought several firsts for Habitat in Frederick County. This was the first time a church group played a major role in a project. The Episcopal Regional Council, representing the nine Episcopal Churches in Frederick County, asked to partner with Habitat on the construction on a lot donated by Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Wade. The Episcopalians framed and roofed the home and paid for the building materials. The Episcopal Suffragan Bishop of Maryland dedicated the home in November. Then the church members threw a dedication shower for the new homeowners-another first in our affiliate's history.

471

2002

471 and 473 West South Street in Frederickinvolved restoration to a duplex in dire need of renovation. The City Community Development Office worked with Habitat to obtain a federal Department of Housing and Urban Development loan to purchase the property. The loan and purchase occurred in 2001 and was completion in 2002.

473

2001

512 West South Street was the first renovation undertaken by Habitat. An anonymous donor gave Habitat one unit in a duplex as well as large donation to begin the renovation process. For the first time in our history, we faced environmental requirements such as lead abatement and the many challenges associated with renovating older properties.

2001

91 and 93 Maryland Avenue were the last two units built on a large lot on the corner of Maryland and Sagner Avenues, near the Frederick Fairgrounds. Habitat purchased this lot in 1998 and immediately began working with some 40 neighbors who opposed the project. The neighbors mistakenly thought that Habitat would build subsidized housing. After listening to the concerns and explaining how Habitat works, we decided to build three duplexes to provide homes for six families. In August 2001, Habitat began constructing the framework. For the third time in four years, Wells Fargo stepped up as a ready partner. The work was completed by late fall.

91 & 93

2001

497 and 499 Sagner Avenue, built on the lot purchased in 1998,received a lot of publicity since their construction was a gift to the Frederick community from Ausherman Homes to mark its 50th year as a leading builder in the area. Ausherman decided to have a one-week building blitz in June and recruited and coordinated the services of nearly 80 subcontractors. The dedication for the duplex took place at the end of the week, right on schedule!

497 & 499

495

2000

493 and 495 Sagner Avenue were the first duplex built on the large lot Habitat purchased in 1998. Construction began in Fall 1999 and ended in Spring 2000. First Nationwide Mortgage and Wells Fargo Mortgage, formerly Norwest Mortgage, partnered with Habitat again. Not only did the companies donate funding, but they also recruited employees to volunteer in the construction.

217

219

1997

217, 217 A, 217 B, 219, and 219 A East 5th Street in Frederick resulted when seed money from the Frederick County Affordable Housing Council enabled Habitat to buy this lot in the Historic District. There was no structure on the lot because a furniture refinishing plant on the site had burned. The size of the lot allowed Habitat to build five townhouses on the site. Three new partners approached Habitat to help. Norwest Mortgage made a sizeable donation and the Norwest Foundation provided a second, larger donation. Bovis Construction offered the services of an experienced construction supervisor and an assistant for the 6 weeks allocated for construction under an accelerated building schedule. This was the first of three building blitzes Habitat has used to construct homes in a compressed timeframe.

6815

1997

6815 Michaels Mill Road in Buckeystown was the first Habitat home outside of Frederick City. Thanks to a substantial donation and a loan from First Nationwide Mortgage, Habitat bought this lot in Buckeystown. The home was larger than those previously built because it was for a family of five. Habitat broke ground in April and completed the home by fall.

111 & 113

1996

111 and 113 Ice Street resulted from a donation of the lot by the Patrick Companies. The donationcreated a great deal of controversy because the lot had been the site of the Colored Men's Free Library from 1916 to 1932.

107

1995

107-B South Bentz Street was built on a lot Rick Wolfe of the South Bentz Street Limited Partnership gave to Habitat so we could build our first home in Frederick. A retired, experienced builder volunteered his time to supervise the construction. The first Habitat volunteers in Frederick were an enthusiastic group of men and women of all ages and from many occupations. They had one thing in common-wanting to make this first home an incentive for the community to build many more homes for God's children in need. The dedication took place in November, a happy occasion for all and a momentous start of much more to come.
